The ramp was broken and I decided not to strip and re-spray this model. So the problem was how to repair the ramp without undoing the model. The hinge needed to be a strong repair so a metal peg of some sort would have to be made. After some thought I used a piece of wire bent into an L shape and by drilling a suitable size hole in the original hinge stump made a good starting point for a strong repair. The wire was undersize so a small sleeve was put over the end to fit the pivot socket on the main body. The real fiddly bit was cementing it in place into the main body without cementing the whole thing into a rigid mass. The cement was a metal based epoxy and used sparingly to hold everything in place and then a little more once the first coat was dry and shaped. I will find the original cars that made up the set to present this on my display./images/982 Tailgate Repair 1.jpg)

A rough example and well worth restoring. Missing ramp, one headlight, bent axles, rusty chassis, and some corrosion, so not too much to do. Strip down could have been simpler as I assumed the rivets holding the upper trailer body to the lower were in fact rivets. I believe that they are studs in the lower part and the upper is opened up over them to assemble. This was a possible way to undo the parts but it may leave the upper part a little bent. The studs were drilled out using a 1/8th drill. I then drilled further to provide sockets for replacement studs. The cab unit was separated by grinding the rivet top off from the lower unit and punching out. The grille tabs were ground off the grille to remove it from the cab. The chassis was removed by easing back the tabs and gently pulling out. All axles were removed with wheels. The body and chassis parts were sandblasted and cleaned with wire wool prior to priming. Two coats of primer was used to provide a good flat base for the top coats. Now/images/101_6425.jpg)
